Leather just may be one of the most enigmatic materials you can wear— it’s timeless, classic, smooth and gives its owner an air of mystery— edge.
But just like all things that are good quality, it’s important to know how to maintain and sustain it.
Unlike cheap fabrics (like polyester, nylon, spandex and other fast fashion fibers), leather lasts years and years and gives off no plastic waste. It simply exists along with you through the years.
So, let us help you upkeep your leather products by showing you the tips and tricks to maintain their beauty, their quality!
Got a spot on your leather jacket that just won’t scrub off with water? Try any of these home remedies:
If you’re dealing with an ink stain, try dabbing a cotton swab or Q-tip with nail polish remover on the spot. Be sure not to rub or wipe because the ink might spread— gentle blots are key!
If your jacket has a grease or oil mark (those are never fun, so our condolences!), be sure to try applying baking soda or cornstarch to the spot. Rub in the mixture with a damp cotton cloth, and let it sit overnight. Wipe off the substance the next morning with a soft material!
It seems unlikely, but toothpaste can come in handy if you have a sticky spot on your jacket that won’t wash out. Gently apply a dab of non-gel toothpaste and rub very delicately only in the affected spot. Once you see the spot is fading, wipe the paste off with a clean and warmly damp cloth.
Winter and weather can affect your leather gloves and add a little dirt or grime that you definitely don’t want lingering. Be sure to never just throw your leather gloves in the washing machine as that can diminish the color! Instead, try this solution:
First, set out a bowl of warm water
Add in pure soap flakes — whatever brand you prefer!
Use a cotton cloth to dip into the solution and apply delicately to the gloves
Be sure to never let too much water gather on the glove—keep the cloth damp
Dry the gloves naturally
You wouldn’t be the only one out there if you’re afraid to ruin your leather shoes so you wear them only on special occasions. Or maybe you did feel free to wear them everywhere and now they’re due for a clean. Take a look at what we recommend!
Before doing any type of cleaning, be sure to take out the laces
For cleaning any scuff marks, be sure to invest in a leather cleaner as well as a soft bristle brush (or a piece of microfiber material)
Apply the cleaner to the brush or microfiber cloth and delicately go over the surface of your shoes until it shines the way you’d like
Apply and gently rub talcum powder or baby powder over any stains or grease marks
Leave on for 3-4 hours to ensure full effect and then wipe off with a soft brush or cloth
If you don’t have those powders, you can apply cornstarch but be sure to then leave it on overnight
